Sahih al-Bukhari 4050 (Book 64, Hadith 96) #3871
The City of Taiba and Unity Among Muslims

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how Allah revealed a verse in the Quran to remind the Muslims of their unity and how Medina is a city that can clear one's sins.

Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: When the Prophet set out for (the battle of) Uhud, some of those who had gone out with him, returned. The companions of the Prophet were divided into two groups. One group said, "We will fight them (ie the enemy)," and the other group said, "We will not fight them". So there came the Divine Revelation:-- '(O Muslims!) Then what is the matter within you that you are divided. Into two parties about the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) Because of what they have earned'. (Qur'an 4:88) On that, the Prophet said, "That is ____taiba____ (ie the city of Medina) which clears one from one's sins as the fire expels the impurities of silver".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains an incident that happened when Prophet Muhammad was about to go for battle. Some of his companions were divided into two groups, one group wanted to fight while the other did not. Allah then revealed a verse in the Quran reminding them of their unity as believers and warning them against hypocrites who are trying to divide them. The Prophet then said that Medina is a city which clears one from their sins just like fire purifies silver from its impurities. This hadith teaches us about the importance of unity among Muslims, being mindful of our actions so we don't fall into hypocrisy, and seeking repentance for our sins by visiting Medina or any other holy place.
