The Importance of Giving Charity

SUMMARY: The hadith emphasizes the importance of giving charity while one is healthy and not waiting until they are about to die.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: There came a man to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, which charity is the most rewardable?" He said, "That you should give charity (in a state when you are) healthy and stingy and fear poverty, hoping to become rich (charity in such a state of health and mind is the best). And you must not defer (charity to such a length) that you are about to die and would be saying: 'This is for so-and-so, and this for so-and-so'. Lo! It has already come into (the possession of) so-and- so". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity while one is healthy and not waiting until they are about to die. Plan ahead for your future and use your wealth wisely while it's still yours. Be generous with your wealth so you can reap its rewards in this life and in the hereafter.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah, highlights the importance of giving charity. A man asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which type of charity was most rewarding and he replied that it was best to give when one is healthy and stingy, hoping to become rich. He warned against waiting until death before giving away all possessions as it would already have been given away by then. This teaches us that we should be generous with our wealth while we are alive so that we can reap its rewards in this life and in the hereafter. It also encourages us to think ahead for our future and not just live for today as poverty can come at any time if we do not plan ahead. We should also remember that whatever wealth or possessions we have now will eventually pass on from us so it is important to use them wisely while they are still ours.
