The Last Words of Abu Jahl

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the death of Abu Jahl, an enemy of Islam, and his last words.

Narrated Anas: Allah's Messenger said on the day of Badr, "Who will go and see what has happened to Abu Jahl?" Ibn Mas'ud went and saw him struck by the two sons of 'Afra and was on the point of death . Ibn Mas'ud said, "Are you Abu Jahl?" Abu Jahl replied, "Can there be a man more superior to the one whom you have killed (or as Sulaiman said, or his own folk have killed)?" Abu Jahl added, "Would that I had been killed by other than a mere farmer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect for enemies even after their passing away

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the death of Abu Jahl, an enemy of Islam who was killed in the battle of Badr. It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik that Allah's Messenger said on the day of Badr "Who will go and see what has happened to Abu Jahl?" Ibn Mas'ud went and saw him struck by two sons of 'Afra and he was on the point of death. When Ibn Mas'ud asked if he was Abu Jahl, he replied with a question asking if there could be someone more superior than him being killed or his own people killing him. He then wished that he had been killed by someone other than a mere farmer. This hadith teaches us that even in our enemies we should show respect as they are still human beings worthy to be respected even after their passing away. We should also remember that no matter how powerful or influential one may be, everyone will eventually die one day regardless their status in life.
