Riyad as-Salihin 1807 (Book 17, Hadith 297) #38296
Making Expiation Through Charity

SUMMARY: Making expiation by giving something in charity is necessary for those who take an oath involuntarily or suggest gambling.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet said, "He who takes an oath and involuntarily says: 'By Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza' should at once affirm: 'La ilaha illallah (there is no true god except Allah)', and he who says to his companion: 'Come let's gamble' should make expiation by giving something in charity". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that if we take an oath involuntarily or suggest gambling, we must make expiation by giving something in charity. Taking an oath is when one swears to do something, and gambling is a game of chance where people bet money on the outcome of a game or event. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that if we do either of these things, then it is necessary to make up for it by giving something in charity as a form of repentance and forgiveness from Allah SWT. This shows us how important it is to be mindful of our words and actions so that we can stay away from any kind of sinning and remain close to Allah SWT.
