The Impermissibility of Silence in Jahiliyyah

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to observe silence as an act of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah).

Qais bin Abu Hazim (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) came upon a woman named Zainab from the Ahmas tribe and noticed that she was observing total silence. He said: "What has happened to her? Why does she not speak?'' People informed him that she had sworn to remain silent. He then said to her: "You should speak, it is not permissible (to observe silence), for it is an act of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)". (After hearing this) she started speaking. Al-Bukhari.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the impermissibility of observing silence as an act during the Days of Ignorance or Jahiliyyah. In this hadith, a woman named Zainab from the Ahmas tribe was observed to be observing total silence. When Abu Bakr noticed this he asked what happened to her and why she wasn't speaking. People informed him that she had sworn to remain silent. He then said that it was not permissible for her to do so because it was an act from the Days of Ignorance or Jahiliyyah. After hearing this she started speaking again which shows us that it is not permissible for us to observe silence as an act during these days. This teaches us that we should always strive towards good deeds and stay away from acts associated with ignorance or jahlilyyah such as remaining silent when there is no need for it.
