Riyad as-Salihin 1789 (Book 17, Hadith 279) #38278
Praising Others with Caution

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against praising someone too much, as it can lead to false assumptions and one will be held accountable for their words.

Abu Bakrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Mention of a man was made to the Prophet and someone praised him whereupon he said, "Woe be to you! You have broken the neck of your friend!" He repeated this several times and added, "If one of you has to praise his friend at all, he should say: 'I reckon him to be such and such and Allah knows him well', if you think him to be so-and-so, you will be accountable to Allah because no one can testify the purity of others against Allah". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before speaking about others .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is warning us against praising someone too much. He said that if we must praise someone, we should say “I reckon him to be such and such and Allah knows him well”. This means that we should not make any assumptions about a person’s character or qualities because only Allah knows what is truly in a person’s heart. We are also reminded of our accountability before Allah for our words; if we make false claims about another person, then we will be held responsible for them on the Day of Judgment. This hadith teaches us to think carefully before speaking about others and to always remember that only Allah knows what is truly in a person’s heart.
