Major Sins Explained

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that the major sins are associating anything in worship with Allah, disobeying parents, killing without justification and taking a false oath.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet said, "Of the major sins are: Associating anything in worship with Allah, disobedience to the parents, killing without justification and taking a false oath (intentionally)". Al- Bukhari. Another narration is: A bedouin came to the Prophet and asked him: "O Messenger of Allah, what are the cardinal sins?" He replied, "Associating anything with Allah in worship". The man asked: "(What is) next?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "Al-Yamin Al-Ghamus". He asked: "What do you mean by Al-Yamin Al-Ghamus?" The Messenger of Allah replied, "Swearing falsely to usurp the property of a Muslim".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that there are four major sins which are prohibited in Islam. The first is associating anything with Allah in worship. This means worshipping anyone or anything other than Allah, such as idols or saints. The second is disobeying one's parents. Parents should be respected and obeyed unless they ask you to do something wrong according to Islamic teachings. The third is killing someone without justification; this includes murder and manslaughter as well as suicide which is also forbidden in Islam. Lastly, taking a false oath intentionally is also considered a major sin; this means lying under oath or swearing falsely to take something from someone else unjustly. All of these sins are serious offenses and should be avoided at all costs if one wishes to live an Islamic life according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
