Riyad as-Salihin 1700 (Book 17, Hadith 190) #38189
Respect for Mosques

SUMMARY: Umar bin Al-Khattab warned two men from At-Taif not to raise their voices in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah.

As-Sa'ib bin Yazid (May Allah be pleased with him) said: While I was in the mosque, someone threw a pebble at me, and when I looked up, I saw that it was 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, who said: "Go and call me these two men". I brought them and 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) asked them: "Where are you from?" On their replying that they belonged to At-Taif, he said: "Had you been the inhabitants of Al-Madinah, I would have given you a beating for raising your voices in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ". Al- Bukhari.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about respecting mosques. It was narrated by As-Sa'ib bin Yazid and 'Umar bin Al-Khattab that while As-Sa'ib was in the mosque, someone threw a pebble at him and when he looked up he saw it was 'Umar. He asked them where they were from and upon learning they were from At Taif he said that if they were from Madinah he would have given them a beating for raising their voices in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah. This hadith teaches us to respect mosques as it is a place where we can connect with Allah through prayer and supplication. We should be mindful of our behaviour when we are inside a mosque so as not to disturb others who are there to worship or learn about Islam. We should also remember that mosques are places where people come together to build community ties so we should be respectful towards each other while inside these sacred spaces.
