The Dangers of Boasting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about how one should not boast or praise oneself, as Allah will ask us about our deeds and qualities.

An-Nu'man bin Bashir (May Allah be pleased with them) said: When 'Abdullah bin Rawahah (May Allah be pleased with him) became unconscious, his sister began to weep and shout: "Alas! For the mountain among men. Alas! for such and such (mentioning his virtuous qualities)". When he recovered his consciousness, he said: "I was asked (disapprovingly, by the angels) about everything you said concerning me whether I am as you said". Al- Bukhari.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is a reminder to all of us that we should not boast or praise ourselves, as Allah will ask us about our deeds and qualities. It was narrated by An Nu'man Bin Bashir and Abdullah Bin Rawahah who were companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When Abdullah became unconscious, his sister began to weep and shout praises for him. When he recovered consciousness, he said that he was asked by the angels whether what she said was true or not. This hadith teaches us that we should be humble in our speech and actions because Allah knows best what is in our hearts. We must strive to do good deeds so that when we are asked on the Day of Judgment, we can answer with confidence knowing that we have done all that we can to please Him. Furthermore, this hadith also reminds us to be mindful of what comes out from our mouths as it reflects on who we are as people; boasting only leads to pride which is a major sin in Islam.
