Riyad as-Salihin 1659 (Book 17, Hadith 149) #38148
Mourning Etiquette According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declaring himself innocent of those who wail, shave their heads and tear up their clothes when someone dies.

Abu Burdah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: (My father) Abu Musa got seriously ill and lost his consciousness. His head was in the lap of a woman of the family and she began to wail. When Abu Musa recovered his consciousness, he said: "I am innocent of those from whom Messenger of Allah is innocent. Verily, the Messenger of Allah declared himself free of (the responsibility) for a woman who wails, shaves her head and tears up her clothes". Al- Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Practice Istiḥādah or Qaṣr when expressing grief instead of wailing, shaving head or tearing up clothes.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about mourning etiquette according to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). When Abu Musa was ill and a woman of his family began to wail, he declared himself free from responsibility for her actions. He said that the Messenger of Allah declared himself free from responsibility for a woman who wails, shaves her head and tears up her clothes. This means that these are not acceptable forms of mourning in Islam. Instead, Muslims should practice Istiḥādah which involves making a small cut on one's clothing or Qaṣr which involves cutting off part of one's clothing as an expression of grief. These acts are more respectful than wailing, shaving one's head or tearing up clothes as they do not involve any extreme behavior or disrespect towards God’s creation.
