Riyad as-Salihin 1654 (Book 17, Hadith 144) #38143
Taking Precautions Against Accidents and Disasters

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of taking precautions to prevent accidents and disasters, such as covering containers, tying up water-skins, locking doors and extinguishing lamps.

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "Cover up the (kitchen) containers (ie, pots, pans, etc), tie up the mouth of the water-skin, lock up the doors and extinguish the lamps, because Satan can neither untie the water-skin nor open the door nor uncover the containers. If one can cover the cooking pot even by placing a piece of wood across it, and pronounce the Name of Allah on it, let him do it. A mouse can sometimes cause a house to burn along its dwellers". Muslim

He also suggested that if one can cover a cooking pot with a piece of wood while pronouncing Allah's name on it then they should do so. This hadith teaches us that we should take all necessary steps to ensure our safety in our homes as well as in public places. It also reminds us that even small creatures like mice can cause great destruction if we are not careful enough with our belongings or environment.
