The Danger of Showing Off

SUMMARY: Doing good deeds for the purpose of gaining recognition and admiration from people will be exposed on the Day of Resurrection.

Jundub (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet said, "He who so acts to show off, Allah will disgrace him on the Day of Resurrection, and he who does good deeds so that people (may hold him in high esteem), Allah will expose his hidden evil intentions before the people on the Day of Resurrection". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do good deeds with purity in intention; strive to please God alone; have humility; act sincerely towards God's pleasure only.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us against doing good deeds for the purpose of gaining recognition and admiration from people. It teaches us that our intentions should always be pure when we do something, as Allah will expose any hidden evil intentions on the Day of Resurrection. We should not do things to show off or to gain praise from others, as this is a form of arrogance which is disliked by Allah. Instead, we should strive to please Allah alone in all that we do, so that He may reward us in this life and in the hereafter.
