The Fate of Abu Jahl

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) asked someone to check on the status of Abu Jahl, and when they found him fatally wounded, Abdullah bin Mas'ud asked if he was Abu Jahl and Abu Jahl replied with a rhetorical question.

Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "Who will go and see what has happened to Abu Jahl?" Ibn Mas'ud went and found that the two sons of 'Afra had struck him fatally (and he was in his last breaths)'.Abdullah bin Mas'ud said, "Are you Abu Jahl?" And took him by the beard. Abu Jahl said, "Can there be a man superior to one you have killed or one whom his own folk have killed?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Investigate what has happened to others; Be humble; Respect powerlessness before Allah's will; Respect life and death decisions made by Allah alone; Show mercy towards those who have wronged you.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Anas tells us about the fate of Abu Jahl. When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard that something had happened to him he sent someone to investigate. When they found him fatally wounded and asked if he was indeed Abu Jahl he replied with a rhetorical question asking if there could be anyone more powerful than one who has been killed or one whose own people have killed them. This hadith teaches us that no matter how powerful we may think we are in this world our ultimate fate is in Allah's hands alone. It also serves as a reminder for us to be humble and not take our power for granted as it can be taken away from us at any moment.
