Sahih al-Bukhari 3943 (Book 63, Hadith 167) #3770
Fasting on 'Ashura Day

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) found that the Jews were fasting on the day of 'Ashura' to commemorate Moses and the children of Israel's victory over Pharaoh. He then ordered Muslims to fast on this day as well, as they are closer to Moses than the Jews.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: When the Prophet arrived at Medina he found that the Jews observed fast on the day of 'Ashura'. They were asked the reason for the fast. They replied, "This is the day when Allah caused Moses and the children of Israel to have victory over Pharaoh, so we fast on this day as a sign of glorifying it". Allah's Messenger said, "We are closer to Moses than you". Then he ordered that fasting on this day should be observed.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what Prophet Muhammad PBUH has commanded us regarding fasting on 'Ashura Day

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Medina and found that the Jews were fasting on a day called ‘Ashura’. When asked why, they said it was to commemorate when Allah caused Moses and his people to have victory over Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ then said that Muslims are closer to Moses than them, so he ordered for Muslims to fast on this day too. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for us as Muslims to remember our history and learn from it, especially when it comes from prophets like Musa ﷺ who was sent by Allah himself. It also shows us how we should be grateful for all of our blessings and victories in life, no matter how small or big they may be!
