Taking the Lead in Acquiring Virtues

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged his companions to come forward and take the lead in acquiring virtues, as Allah will put those who fall behind.

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Messenger of Allah perceived a tendency among his Companions to stand in the back rows, he said to them, "Come forward and be close to me and let those who come after you, follow your lead. If people continue to fall behind (ie, in acquiring virtues), Allah puts them behind". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith of Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri speaks to the importance of taking initiative and leading by example when it comes to acquiring virtues. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was concerned that his companions were falling behind in their efforts to acquire good qualities, so he encouraged them to come forward and take the lead. He reminded them that if they failed to do so, Allah would put them behind. This hadith serves as a reminder for us all that we should strive for excellence in our character and actions, as this is what will bring us closer to Allah. We should also encourage others around us - especially our children - to do the same, setting an example through our own behavior and words.
