Sahih al-Bukhari 3929 (Book 63, Hadith 154) #3757
Honoring the Pious

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman who took care of Uthman bin Maz'un until he died and the Prophet (ﷺ) was surprised at her knowledge that Allah had honored him. He then said that he did not know what Allah would do to him, and asserted that no one could be more pious than Uthman.

Narrated 'Um Al-'Ala: An Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet that the Ansar drew lots concerning the dwelling of the Emigrants'.Uthman bin Maz'un was decided to dwell with them (ie Um Al-'Ala's family), 'Uthman fell ill and I nursed him till he died, and we covered him with his clothes. Then the Prophet came to us and I (addressing the dead body) said, "O Abu As-Sa'ib, may Allah's Mercy be on you! I bear witness that Allah has honored you". On that the Prophet said, "How do you know that Allah has honored him?" I replied, "I do not know. May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Messenger ! But who else is worthy of it (if not 'Uthman)?" He said, "As to him, by Allah, death has overtaken him, and I hope the best for him. By Allah, though I am the Apostle of Allah, yet I do not know what Allah will do to me," By Allah, I will never assert the piety of anyone after him. That made me sad, and when I slept I saw in a dream a flowing stream for 'Uthman bin Maz'un. I went to Allah's Messenger and told him of it. He remarked, "That symbolizes his (good) deeds".

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faith in God’s plan for us all regardless of whether it is good news or bad news for us personally; Honor those who are devoted to their faith in Islam; Be humble even if you are sent by God as a messenger .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman named Um Al-'Ala who took care of Uthman bin Maz'un until his death. When she saw the Prophet ﷺ, she told him that she believed Allah had honored Uthman. The Prophet ﷺ was surprised by this statement and said he did not know what Allah would do to him, but asserted that no one could be more pious than Uthman. This story teaches us the importance of honoring those who are pious and devoted to their faith in Islam. It also shows us how even though the Prophet ﷺ was sent by God as a messenger, he still did not know what God's plan for him or anyone else would be in life or after death. We should remember this lesson when we think we understand everything about our lives or other people's lives because only God knows best what will happen next in our lives or theirs.
