The Five Pillars of Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that Islam is based on five pillars: testifying to the Oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad, performing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj and fasting during Ramadan.

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "Islam is based on five (pillars): testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger; performing of Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat); the payment of Zakat; performing Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House of Allah (Ka'bah); and Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from Prophet Muhammad teaches us about the five pillars of Islam which are essential for a Muslim's faith. These five pillars are testifying to the Oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad, performing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj and fasting during Ramadan. Testifying to the Oneness of Allah means believing in one God who is all-powerful and all-knowing. It also means believing in His prophets including Prophet Muhammad as His messenger who brought down revelations from God for mankind’s guidance. Performing prayer means offering prayers at least five times a day facing towards Kaaba in Makkah while reciting verses from Quran or supplications praising God or asking for forgiveness or help from Him. Paying Zakat is giving 2.5% portion out of one’s wealth annually as charity to those who are less fortunate than us so that they can have their basic needs fulfilled too like food, clothing etc.. Performing Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Makkah which every able Muslim should perform once in his/her lifetime if possible financially and physically both . Lastly fasting during Ramadan means abstaining oneself from food & drink & other worldly desires between dawn till dusk throughout this holy month so that we can learn self control & patience & also feel empathy towards those who don’t have enough resources available with them . All these practices help us become better Muslims by strengthening our faith & relationship with our Creator .
