Riyad as-Salihin 1036 (Book 8, Hadith 46) #37525
The Devil's Tactics During Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that when the call to prayer is made, the devil runs away and when it is finished, he returns. When the Iqamah is announced, he turns his back and after it is finished, he tries to distract people from their prayers.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "When Adhan for Salat is pronounced, the devil takes to his heels and breaks wind with noise so as not to hear the call. When the Adhan is finished, he returns. When the Iqamah is announced, he turns his back, and after it is finished, he returns again to distract the attention of one and makes him remember things which he does not recall in his mind before the Salat, and says 'Remember this, and this,' and thus causes one to forget how many Rak'at he performed". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how the devil tries to disrupt our prayers. It tells us that when we hear the call for prayer or Adhan, we should be aware that this is a sign for us to start praying and also a sign for the devil to flee away from us. When we hear Iqamah which announces that it's time for prayer, then again this serves as a reminder for us to start praying but also serves as a reminder for the devil turn his back on us so he can't distract our attention during our prayers. The hadith further explains how sometimes during our prayers we may forget how many Rak'ats we have prayed due to being distracted by thoughts or ideas which were not in our minds before starting prayer; this could be due to interference from Satan who wants us not focus on what we are doing and instead think about other things.
