Sahih al-Bukhari 3912 (Book 63, Hadith 137) #3740
Grants for Early Emigrants

SUMMARY: Umar bin Al-Khattab gave a grant of 4000 Dirhams to every Early Emigrant and 3500 Dirhams to Ibn 'Umar, as his parents had taken him with them when they migrated.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: 'Umar bin Al-Khattab fixed a grant of 4000 (Dirhams) for every Early Emigrant (ie Muhajir) and fixed a grant of 3500 (Dirhams) only for Ibn 'Umar. Somebody said to 'Umar, "Ibn 'Umar is also one of the Early Emigrants; why do you give him less than four-thousand?" 'Umar replied, "His parents took him with them when they migrated, so he was not like the one who had migrated by himself.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind towards those who are less fortunate than you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the generosity of Umar bin Al-Khattab towards the early emigrants. He gave a grant of 4000 dirhams to every early emigrant who migrated by themselves, and 3500 dirhams to Ibn 'Umar as his parents took him with them when they migrated. This shows that Umar was very generous and kind towards those who left their homes in search of a better life in Madinah. It also teaches us that we should be generous and kind towards those who are less fortunate than us, even if it means sacrificing something from our own possessions.
