Riyad as-Salihin 883 (Book 5, Hadith 40) #37372
Blessing Others with Kindness

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) responded to the Jews who sneezed in his presence with a blessing that was different from what they were expecting.

Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Jews used to intentionally sneeze in the presence of the Messenger of Allah hoping that he would say to them: 'Yarhamukum-ullah (may Allah have mercy on you),' but he would respond with: "Yahdikum-ullahu wa yuslihu balakum (may Allah guide you and render sound your state of affairs)". Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi.
وعن أبي موسي رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ كان اليهود يتعاطسون عند رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يرجون أن يقول لهم‏:‏ يرحمكم الله، فيقول‏:‏ ‏"‏‏"‏يهديكم الله ويصلح بالكم‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه أبو داود، والترمذي وقال‏:‏ حديث حسن صحيح‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

QUICK LESSONS:
Respond kindly and compassionately towards others regardless of their background or beliefs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of responding to others in a kind and compassionate manner. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was approached by some Jews who sneezed in his presence and expected him to say “Yarhamukum-ullah” which is an Arabic phrase meaning “may Allah have mercy on you”. However, instead of saying this phrase he said “Yahdikum-ullahu wa yuslihu balakum” which means “may Allah guide you and render sound your state of affairs”. This shows us that even when faced with people who may not have the best intentions towards us we should still respond to them kindly and compassionately as this is what our beloved Prophet did. We should also remember that it is important for us to always wish good things for others no matter their background or beliefs as this will bring blessings into our own lives too.
