Riyad as-Salihin 878 (Book 5, Hadith 35) #37367
The Etiquette of Sneezing and Yawning

SUMMARY: Allah likes it when people sneeze and say Alhamdulillah, and dislikes it when people yawn. When someone yawns, they should try to restrain it as much as possible.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning. When any one of you sneezes and says 'Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)', it becomes obligatory upon every Muslim who hears him to respond with 'Yarhamuk-Allah (may Allah have mercy on you)'. Yawning is from the devil. When one of you feels like yawning, he should restrain it as much as possible, for the devil laughs when one of you yawns". Al-Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Say Alhumdulilah after a person has sneezed; Respond with Yarhmaukallah if you hear someone else saying Alhumdulilah after a sneeze; Try your best not to yield into temptation by restraining yourself from yawning; Practice good manners in all aspects of life

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the etiquette of sneezing and yawning. When we sneeze, we should say "Al-Hamdu Lillah" which means "Praise be to Allah". It is then obligatory for every Muslim who hears us to respond with "Yarhamuk-Allah" which means "May Allah have mercy on you". On the other hand, yawning is from the devil so we should try our best to restrain ourselves from doing so. Whenever we feel like yawning, we must remember that the devil laughs at us when we do so. Therefore, this hadith encourages us to practice good manners in all aspects of our lives including how we react when someone sneezes or how much control do we have over ourselves when feeling like yawning.
