Sahih al-Bukhari 3907 (Book 63, Hadith 132) #3735
The Journey Food of Migration

SUMMARY: Asma was named 'Dhat-un-Nitaqain' because she divided her waist belt into two to tie the container of the journey food for the Prophet and Abu Bakr when they wanted to migrate to Medina.

Narrated Asma: I prepared the journey food for the Prophet and Abu Bakr when they wanted (to migrate to) Medina. I said to my father (Abu Bakr), "I do not have anything to tie the container of the journey food with except my waist belt". He said, "Divide it lengthwise into two". I did so, and for this reason I was named 'Dhat-un-Nitaqain' (ie the owner of two belts). (Ibn 'Abbas said, "Asma', Dhat-un-Nitaq")

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a story of how Asma bint Abu Bakr prepared journey food for the Prophet and his companion Abu Bakr when they were migrating from Mecca to Medina. To tie up the container of their journey food, she used her waist belt which she then divided into two parts. For this reason, she was given a nickname ‘Dhat-un-Nitaqain’ which means ‘the owner of two belts’. This hadith teaches us that we should be willing to sacrifice our possessions in order to help others in need. It also shows us that even small acts can have big impacts on people's lives and can be remembered for generations afterwards.
