Ablution During Travel

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was travelling and asked for water to perform ablution. He washed his face, arms, and head before passing wet hands over his leather socks.

Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was with the Messenger of Allah in a journey one night, and he asked me, "Do you have any water with you?" I said, "Yes". So he dismounted from his riding camel and walked away (to answer the call of nature) until he disappeared in the darkness. When he returned, I poured out some water from a vessel and he washed his face. He was wearing a long woolen cloak and could not take out his forearms from his sleeves, so he brought them out from below the cloak and then washed them, and then passed his (wet) hands over his head. I stretched out my hand to take off his Khuff (leather socks), but he said, "Leave them. I put them on after performing Wudu'," and he passed his (wet) hands over them. Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Another narration is: The Messenger of Allah was wearing a Syrian cloak with tight sleeves. Another narration is: This incident took place during the battle of Tabuk.

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform ablutions even when travelling or in difficult situations

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) practice of performing ablution while travelling. It is narrated that he asked for water from Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (May Allah be pleased with him), who was accompanying the Prophet on a journey one night. The Prophet then walked away until he disappeared in the darkness to answer the call of nature. When he returned, Al-Mughirah poured out some water from a vessel and the Prophet washed his face with it. He was wearing a long woolen cloak which had tight sleeves so he could not take out his forearms from them; instead he brought them out from below the cloak and then washed them before passing wet hands over his head. Al-Mughirah offered to take off the Prophet's Khuff (leather socks), but he declined saying that they were put on after performing Wudu', so instead just passed wet hands over them. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to maintain cleanliness even when we are travelling or in difficult situations as this was something practiced by our beloved prophet himself!
