Riyad as-Salihin 689 (Book 1, Hadith 10) #37178
The Characteristics of Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: A person who betrays trust, lies, acts treacherously and behaves in an imprudent and insulting manner when arguing is a hypocrite.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'as (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "Four are the qualities which, when found in a person, make him a sheer hypocrite, and one who possesses one of them, possesses one characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it. These are: When he is entrusted with something, he betrays trust; when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he acts treacherously; and when he argues, he behaves in a very imprudent, insulting manner". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

TOPICS
hypocrisy  *  trustworthiness  *  honesty  *  integrity

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to avoid betraying trust; speaking lies; acting treacherously or behaving in an imprudent and insulting manner.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explains the characteristics of hypocrisy. It teaches us that if someone betrays trust when entrusted with something; speaks lies; acts treacherously when they make a promise; or behaves in an imprudent and insulting manner when arguing then they are considered to be a hypocrite. We should strive to avoid these qualities as they are not traits of good character. Instead we should focus on being trustworthy, honest and having integrity in all our dealings with others.
