Riyad as-Salihin 682 (Book 1, Hadith 3) #37171
The Branches of Faith

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that faith has many branches, the most important being the declaration of faith and the least being removing harmful objects from roads.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "Iman has sixty odd or seventy odd branches. The uppermost of all these is the Testimony of Faith: 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no true god except Allah) while the least of them is the removal of harmful object from the road. And shyness is a branch of Iman". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of faith in Islam. According to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), faith has many branches and is not limited to just one thing. The most important branch is declaring one's belief in Allah by saying "La ilaha illallah" which means "there is no true god except Allah". This declaration is known as the Testimony of Faith and it shows that a person believes in Allah and His teachings. On the other hand, even small acts such as removing harmful objects from roads are also considered branches of faith because they show a person's commitment to doing good deeds for others. Lastly, shyness or modesty is also an important branch because it helps people stay away from wrongdoings and bad behavior.
