Sunan Ibn Majah 214 (Book) #37116
The Comparison of Believers and Hypocrites in Reciting Quran

SUMMARY: The Prophet compares the believer who recites the Qur'an to a citron, which has both a good taste and smell. He compares the believer who does not read the Qur'an to a date, which has a good taste but no smell. He also compares the hypocrite who reads the Qur'an to sweet basil, which has a good smell but bitter taste. Lastly, he compares the hypocrite who does not read the Qur'an to Colocynth (bitter apple), which is bitter and has no smell.

It was narrated from Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari that: The Prophet said: "The likeness of the believer who recites the Qur'an is that of a citron, the taste and smell of which are good. The likeness of a believer who does not read the Qur'an is that of a date, the taste of which is good but it has no smell. The likeness of a hypocrite who reads the Qur'an is that of a sweet basil, the smell of which is good but its taste is bitter. And the likeness of a hypocrite who does not read the Qur'an is that of a Colocynth (bitter apple), the taste of which is bitter and it has no smell'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be consistent in reading & reciting Allah's words from The Holy Quaran

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad compared believers and hypocrites in terms of their relationship with reciting Quran. He compared believers who recite Quran to citrons that have both good taste and smell; believers who do not recite Quran are like dates that have only good taste; hypocrites who recite Quran are like sweet basil that have only good smells; while hypocrites that do not recite Quran are like colocynths that have neither good tastes nor smells. This hadith teaches us about how important it is for us as Muslims to be consistent in our recitation of Allah's words from His book - The Holy Quaran - so we can reap its benefits spiritually as well as physically.
