Sunan Ibn Majah 164 (Book) #37066
The Praise of the Ansar

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) praised the Ansar and said that if it wasn't for the Hijrah, he would have been a man from among them.

It was narrated from 'Abdul-Muhaimin bin 'Abbas bin Sahl bin Sa'd from his father, from his grandfather, that: The Messenger of Allah said: "The Ansar are an inner garment and the people are an outer garment. If the people were to head towards one valley or a narrow mountain pass and the Ansar towards another, I would travel to the valley of the Ansar, and were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man from among the Ansar".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for those who help you out in times of need . Value your relationships with others . Appreciate those around you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how much Prophet Muhammad valued and appreciated the help of the Ansar. The Ansar were a group of people who lived in Medina and helped Prophet Muhammad when he migrated there from Mecca. They provided him with shelter, food, protection and other necessities to make sure that he was safe in their city. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad said that if it wasn't for his migration to Medina, he would have been one of them. He also said that they are like an inner garment while all other people are like an outer garment; meaning they are more important than everyone else because they helped him out when no one else did. This hadith teaches us to be grateful for those who help us out in times of need and not take them for granted because without their help we wouldn't be where we are today. It also teaches us to value our relationships with others as well as our own family members because these relationships can be very beneficial in times of hardship or difficulty.
