Sunan Ibn Majah 54 (Book) #36956
The Three Pillars of Knowledge

SUMMARY: Knowledge is based on three things, which are a clear verse from the Quran, an established Sunnah, and rulings by which inheritance is divided fairly.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Amr said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Knowledge is based on three things, and anything beyond that is superfluous: a clear Verse, an established Sunnah, or the rulings by which the inheritance is divided fairly'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that knowledge is based on three main sources. The first source of knowledge is the Quran, which contains clear verses that provide guidance to Muslims. The second source of knowledge is the Sunnah, or teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Lastly, rulings by which inheritance can be divided fairly are also a source of knowledge. This hadith emphasizes that any other information beyond these three sources should not be taken into consideration as it would be superfluous or unnecessary.
