Beware of Falsely Attributing Statements to the Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against attributing false statements to him and said that whoever does so will go to Hell.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever attributes to me something that I have not said, let him take his place in Hell".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ مَنْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَىَّ مَا لَمْ أَقُلْ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ

This hadith is a warning from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, about falsely attributing statements to him. He said that anyone who does this will take their place in Hell. We should only share what we know for sure he said or did, and if we are unsure then it is best not to share it at all.
