(Book 58, Hadith 14) #36899
Refusing Unlawful Requests

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was asked for something that was not good for either him or the person asking, so he refused to give it.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from his father that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave a man from the Banu Abd al-Ashal charge over some sadaqa. When he came to ask him for some camels from the sadaqa, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was so angry that the anger showed in his face. One way in which anger could be recognized in his face was that his eyes became red. Then he said, "This man has asked me for what is not good for me or him. If I refuse it, I hate to refuse. If I give it to him, I will give him what is not good for me or him". The man said, "Messenger of Allah! I will never ask you for any of it!"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's refusal to give something unlawful when asked by a man from the Banu Abd al-Ashal. The Prophet's anger could be seen in his face as his eyes became red. He said that if he gave it to him, it would not be good for either of them and so he refused to do so. This teaches us that we should always refuse requests which are unlawful or immoral and instead strive towards doing what is right and just according to Islamic teachings. We should also remember that even though we may feel angry at times due to certain situations, we must remain calm and composed in order to make wise decisions which will benefit us in the long run.
