Cowardice, Miserliness & Lying in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked if a believer can be a coward, miser or liar and he answered that they can be cowards and misers but not liars.

Malik related to me that Safwan ibn Sulaym said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, 'Can the mumin be a coward?' He said, 'Yes'. He was asked, 'Can the mumin be a miser?' He said, 'Yes'. He was asked, 'Can the mumin be a liar?' He said, 'No'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the qualities of a believer according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It states that believers can be cowards and misers but not liars. Cowardice is when one lacks courage to do something due to fear while miserliness is being overly frugal with money or resources. Both of these qualities are allowed in Islam as long as it does not lead one to lie or commit any other sin. Lying however, is strictly prohibited in Islam as it goes against the teachings of truthfulness and honesty which are essential for any believer.
