The Definition of Backbiting and Slander

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explains that backbiting is speaking about someone in a way they would not want to be spoken about, even if it is true. Slander is speaking something false about someone.

Malik related to me from al-Walid ibn Abdullah ibn Sayyad that al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah ibn Hantab al-Makhzumi informed him that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "What is backbiting?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "It is to mention about a man what he does not want to hear". He said, "Messenger of Allah! Even if it is true?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "If you utter something false, then it is slander".

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak positively or remain silent instead of engaging in either backbiting or slander
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the difference between backbiting and slander. Backbiting is when you speak about someone in a way they would not want to be spoken about, even if it is true. On the other hand, slander is when you say something false about someone. It's important to remember that both of these are wrong and should be avoided as much as possible according to Islamic teachings. We should always strive to speak positively of others or remain silent instead of engaging in either backbiting or slander.
