Sahih al-Bukhari 3837 (Book 63, Hadith 62) #3665
Funeral Procession Etiquette in Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the pre-Islamic customs of standing up for a funeral procession and how it was discouraged in Islam.

Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim: Al-Qasim used to walk in front of the funeral procession. He used not to get up for the funeral procession (in case it passed by him). And he narrated from 'Aisha that she said, "The people of the pre-lslamic period of ignorance used to stand up for the funeral procession. When they saw it they used to say twice: 'You were noble in your family. What are you now?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect to those who have passed away by not speaking ill or making fun even after their death.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the etiquette of funeral processions during the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, known as Jahiliyyah. During this time, people would stand up when they saw a funeral procession pass by them and say twice “You were noble in your family. What are you now?” However, this practice was discouraged in Islam as it is seen as disrespectful to those who have passed away. Instead, Muslims should show respect to those who have passed away by not speaking ill of them or making fun of them even after their death.
