Justice and Retribution

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab killed multiple people for one man who was killed by trickery. He also said that if the whole city of Sana had joined forces against him, he would have killed them all.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said from Said ibn al-Musayyab that Umar ibn al-Khattab killed five or seven people for one man whom they had killed secretly by trickery. Umar said, "Had all the people of Sana joined forces against him, I would have killed them all".

QUICK LESSONS:
Uphold justice at all times

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about justice and retribution. It tells us that Umar ibn al-Khattab, a companion of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, killed five or seven people for one man who was murdered by trickery. He also said that if the whole city of Sana had joined forces against him, he would have killed them all. This shows us how important justice is in Islam and how it should be upheld even in extreme cases such as this one. It also teaches us to be wary of trickery and deceitful behavior as it can lead to serious consequences. We should strive to uphold justice at all times and not take matters into our own hands when someone has wronged us or someone else; instead we should leave it up to the authorities to decide what action needs to be taken in order for justice to prevail.
