Punishment for Theft in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that stealing is punishable by cutting off the hand, but this punishment does not apply to fruit or sheep taken from their natural environment.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman abu Husayn al-Makki that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The hand is not cut off for fruit hanging on the tree and for sheep kept in the mountains. So when they are taken from the fold or the place where the fruit is dried, a hand is cut off for whatever reaches the price of a shield".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other people's property & possessions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the punishment for theft in Islam. According to the Prophet Muhammad's teachings, if someone steals something that is worth more than a shield, then their hand should be cut off as a form of punishment. However, this rule does not apply to fruit or sheep taken from their natural environment; these are exempt from such punishments. This hadith also teaches us about justice and fairness; it shows us that we should be careful when punishing people and make sure that we are being fair and just in our decisions. It also reminds us of the importance of respecting other people's property and possessions so as to avoid any potential punishments for theft.
