The Importance of Paying Rent

SUMMARY: Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf rented land and his son thought it was theirs due to the length of time it had been in their possession, but he clarified at his death that they should pay rent for it.

Malik related to me that he had heard that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf rented land, and he continued to have it in his possession until he died. His son said, "I thought that it was ours because of the length of time which it had remained in his hands, until he mentioned it to us at his death. He ordered us to pay some rent which he owed in gold or silver".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill your obligations , Pay dues associated with rental properties .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of paying rent when renting a property. It is narrated by Malik who heard from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf, who rented a piece of land and kept it in his possession until he died. His son assumed that the land belonged to them because they had held onto it for so long, but upon his death, Abd ar-Rahman clarified that they were still obligated to pay rent for the property in gold or silver. This teaches us that even if we have held onto something for a long period of time, we must still fulfill our obligations and pay any dues associated with what we have taken on loan or rented out.
