Renting Out Fields

SUMMARY: It is permissible to rent out fields for gold or silver, and it is not necessary to follow the hadith of Rafi ibn Khadij.

Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab that he asked Salim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Umar about renting out fields. He said, "There is no harm in it for gold or silver". Ibn Shihab said, "I said to him, 'What do you think of the hadith which is mentioned from Rafi ibn Khadij?'" He said, ''Rafi has exaggerated. If I had a field, I would rent it out".

QUICK LESSONS:
Renting out fields for gold or silver is permissible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of renting out fields for gold or silver. Malik related from Ibn Shihab that he asked Salim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Umar about renting out fields. Salim said that there was no harm in it for gold or silver. Ibn Shihab then mentioned a hadith from Rafi ibn Khadij which seemed to contradict this statement. However, Salim said that Rafi has exaggerated and if he had a field he would rent it out himself. This suggests that it is permissible to rent out fields for gold or silver and one does not need to follow the hadith of Rafi ibn Khadij in this regard.
