Taking Only What Is Needed

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who instructed his slave to take some of his family's wheat and buy barley with it, taking only an equal amount.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Sulayman ibn Yasar told him that one time the fodder of the animals of Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth was finished so he said to his slave, "Take some of your family's wheat as food and buy with it barley, and take only a like quantity'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when using resources; Help others when they are in need; Be generous with your possessions; Do not be wasteful or take more than what you need

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of taking only what is needed. Abd ar-Rahman ibn al-Aswad ibn Abd Yaghuth was in need of fodder for his animals, so he instructed his slave to take some of their family's wheat and use it to buy barley, but only an equal amount. This teaches us that we should not be wasteful or take more than what we need. We should be mindful and conscious when using resources so that we can conserve them for future generations as well as those in need now. It also shows us the importance of being generous with our possessions and helping others when they are in need, even if it means sacrificing something ourselves.
