Trading Food Responsibly

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab revoked a sale of food that was made before it was taken delivery of, and ordered not to sell food until it is taken delivery of.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Hakim ibn Hizam traded in food for people as Umar ibn al-Khattab had ordered him to do. Hakim re-sold the food before he had taken delivery of it. That reached Umar ibn al-Khattab and he revoked the sale and said, "Do not sell food which you have purchased until you take delivery of it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Trade responsibly , Consume good quality goods

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of trading responsibly. Umar ibn al-Khattab noticed that Hakim ibn Hizam had sold food before he had taken delivery of it, and so he revoked the sale and ordered him not to do this again. This teaches us that we should be responsible when trading goods, and only sell them after we have received them ourselves. We should also make sure that what we are selling is good quality, as Allah has commanded us to only consume good things. Furthermore, this hadith shows us the importance of following orders given by those in authority over us - in this case Umar ibn al-Khattab - as they are there for our benefit and protection.
