Exchange of Goods

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab taught that when exchanging goods, the same amount of money should be given for the same amount of goods.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that al-Oasim ibn Muhammad said, ''Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'A dinar for a dinar, and a dirham for a dirham, and a sa for a sa. Something to be collected later is not to be sold for something at hand'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Give an equal amount when exchanging goods or money

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about exchanging goods and money. Umar ibn al-Khattab taught that when exchanging goods or money, the same amount should be given for the same amount. For example, if someone wants to exchange a dinar for a dinar or a dirham for a dirham or a sa for a sa then they must give an equal amount in return. He also said that something to be collected later should not be sold for something at hand. This means that if someone has something they will receive in the future but want to exchange it now then it is not allowed as this would not be fair and equal exchange. The values taught by this hadith are fairness and equality in exchanges as well as patience and waiting until one can receive what they are due instead of selling it before receiving it.
