Oaths Not To Do Good

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who bought an orchard and was worried that he would suffer a loss. He asked the owner to reduce the price, but the owner refused and made an oath not to do so. The buyer's mother went to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who said that by making this oath, he had sworn not to do good.

Yahya related to me from Malik that Abu'r-Rijal Muhammad ibn Abd ar-Rahman heard his mother, Amra bint Abd ar-Rahman say, "A man bought the fruit of an enclosed orchard in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he tended it while staying on the land. It became clear to him that there was going to be some loss. He asked the owner of the orchard to reduce the price for him or to revoke the sale, but the owner made an oath not to do so. The mother of the buyer went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and told him about it. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'By this oath, he has sworn not to do good'. The owner of the orchard heard about it and went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah, the choice is his'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who purchased an orchard and was worried that he would suffer some loss due to it. He asked the owner of the orchard to reduce its price for him, but instead of doing so, the owner made an oath not to do so. The buyer's mother then went to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about it. Upon hearing this, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that by making such an oath, he has sworn not to do good. Hearing this, the owner of the orchard realized his mistake and offered his buyer a choice in order for him not be at any disadvantage due to his mistake. This hadith teaches us several important values such as honesty in business dealings as well as being mindful of our words when we make promises or take oaths since they can have serious consequences if broken. It also teaches us how important it is for us all - both buyers and sellers -to be fair in our dealings with each other so no one suffers any losses due their mistakes or misjudgments .
