Taking Four Wives

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a man from Thaqif who had ten wives to take four and separate from the rest.

Yahya related to me from Malik that Ibn Shihab said, "I have heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to a man from Thaqif who had ten wives when he became muslim, 'Take four and separate from the rest'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Practice moderation in marriage; strive for justice between all spouses; maintain balance in life.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about marriage and polygamy in Islam. It was narrated by Yahya and Malik Ibn Shihab that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised a man from Thaqif who had ten wives to take four of them as his wives and separate from the rest. This shows that Islam does not encourage having multiple wives but allows it under certain conditions. The Prophet's advice was meant to ensure justice between all of the wives so that each wife would receive her due rights without any discrimination or favoritism towards one wife over another. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us about moderation in all aspects of life including marriage; it encourages us to practice balance in our lives so we can be fair with everyone around us.
