Divorce Etiquette

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar divorced one of his wives while on the way to the mosque and chose to take a different route rather than ask permission to enter.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar divorced one of his wives in the house of Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while he was on the way to the mosque. He went another route from behind the houses being averse to ask permission to enter until he returned to her.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about proper etiquette when it comes to divorce. Abdullah ibn Umar was on his way to the mosque when he decided to divorce one of his wives. Rather than asking permission from Hafsa, who was the wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he chose another route so as not to disturb her. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult situations such as this one we should be mindful of other people's feelings and respect their privacy. We should also be aware that our actions can have an effect on those around us and try our best not make them uncomfortable or distressed in any way.
