The Idda of Divorced Women

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the idda (waiting period) for a woman who has been divorced.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar divorced his wife while she was menstruating in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, Umar ibn al-Khattab asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about it. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Go and tell him to take her back and keep her until she is purified and then has a period and then is purified. Then if he wishes, he an keep her, and if he wishes he should divorce her before he has intercourse with her. That is the idda which Allah has commanded for women who are divorced".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the waiting period or 'iddah' that a woman must observe after being divorced by her husband. According to this hadith, if a man divorces his wife while she is menstruating, he should take her back and keep her until she is purified and then has another period and then is purified again. After this waiting period, if he wishes he can keep her or divorce her before having intercourse with her. This waiting period was commanded by Allah as an act of kindness towards women who have been divorced so they can be sure of their status before moving on with their lives. It also serves as an opportunity for couples to reconcile during this time if they wish to do so.
