Divorce and Idda in the Time of Uthman Ibn Affan

SUMMARY: A woman divorced her husband for a compensation in the time of Uthman ibn Affan and Abdullah ibn Umar said that her idda is the idda of a divorced woman.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Rubayyi bint Muawwidh ibn Afra came with her paternal uncle to Abdullah ibn Umar and told him that she had divorced her husband for a compensation in the time of Uthman ibn Affan, and he heard about it and did not disapprove. Abdullah ibn Umar said, "Her idda is the idda of a divorced woman".

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah’s laws & regulations regarding marriage & divorce . Respect your spouse . Follow justice when dealing with marital issues .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about divorce and waiting period during the time of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan. Rubayyi bint Muawwidh came to Abdullah ibn Umar with her paternal uncle and told him that she had divorced her husband for a compensation. Abdullah ibn Umar did not disapprove it and said that her waiting period is like any other divorced woman's waiting period. This hadith teaches us that even if someone divorces their spouse for a compensation or money, they still have to go through the same process as any other divorcee would have to go through which includes observing an obligatory waiting period before remarrying again. It also shows us how Caliph Uthman was very just in his rulings as he did not disapprove this act even though it was uncommon at his time.
