Sahih al-Bukhari 366 (Book 8, Hadith 18) #362
Clothing for Muhrims

SUMMARY: A person asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) what a Muhrim should wear and he replied with a list of clothing items that are not allowed.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A person asked Allah's Messenger , "What should a Muhrim wear?" He replied, "He should not wear shirts, trousers, a burnus (a hooded cloak), or clothes which are stained with saffron or Wars (a kind of perfume). Whoever does not find a sandal to wear can wear Khuffs (socks made from thick fabric or leather), but these should be cut short so as not to cover the ankles.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar states that when someone is in the state of Ihram, they should not wear certain types of clothing. These include shirts, trousers, burnus (a hooded cloak) and clothes stained with saffron or Wars perfume. If sandals are not available to wear, then Khuffs can be worn but they must be cut short so as to not cover the ankles. This hadith teaches us about the importance of following dress codes during religious activities and also reminds us to respect religious customs and traditions. It also encourages us to take care when dressing ourselves for any occasion so as to avoid offending others or going against Islamic teachings.
