(Book 28, Hadith 34) #36194
Intercourse with Two Sisters

SUMMARY: Uthman ibn Affan and Ali ibn Abi Talib both expressed their opinion on the matter of having intercourse with two sisters who one owned. Uthman said he would not do it, while Ali said that if he had authority, he would punish someone who did it as an example.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Qabisa ibn Dhu'ayb that a man asked Uthman ibn Affan whether one could have intercourse with two sisters who one owned. Uthman said, "One ayat makes them halal, and one ayat makes them haram. As for me, I wouldn't like to do it". The man left him and met one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked him about it, and he said, "Had I any authority and I found someone who had done it, I would punish him as an example". Ibn Shihab added, "I think that it was Ali ibn Abi Talib".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other people's opinions ; Exercise caution when engaging in certain acts ; Follow Islamic law .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses a man's question about whether or not it is permissible to have intercourse with two sisters whom one owns. Uthman ibn Affan responded by saying that there is an ayat in the Quran which makes this act halal and another ayat which makes it haram; however, he personally would not do such a thing. The man then asked another companion of Prophet Muhammad's about this issue; this companion was believed to be Ali ibn Abi Talib who responded by saying that if he had any authority over such matters, then anyone found doing so should be punished as an example for others. This hadith teaches us that although certain acts may be permissible according to Islamic law, we should still exercise caution when engaging in them due to their potential consequences or implications on our character or reputation. It also serves as a reminder for us all to respect each other’s opinions even if they differ from our own beliefs or values.
