Obligation of Bride-Price

SUMMARY: The bride-price is obligatory when a man takes his wife to his house and co-habits with her.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Zayd ibn Thabit said, "When a man takes his wife to his house and co-habits with her then the bride-price is obliged".

QUICK LESSONS:
Paying bride price according to agreement between two parties before marriage .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the obligation of bride price in marriage. According to this hadith, when a man takes his wife to his house and cohabits with her then the bride price is obliged. This means that it is mandatory for the husband to pay a certain amount of money or goods as agreed upon by both parties before marriage. This payment is known as Mahr or dowry which can be paid in one lump sum or in installments over time. The purpose of this payment is to provide financial security for the woman and ensure that she will be taken care of if something happens to her husband such as death or divorce. It also serves as an incentive for men not to take their wives lightly since they have invested money into them. Furthermore, it serves as a reminder that marriage should not be taken lightly but rather should be entered into with seriousness and commitment from both sides.
