Eating Fish That Have Died From Natural Causes

SUMMARY: Eating fish that have died from natural causes is permissible.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that Sad al- Jari, the mawla of Umar ibn al-Khattab asked Abdullah ibn Umar about fish which had killed each other or which had died from severe cold . He said, "There is no harm in eating them'.' Sad said,' 'I then asked Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al As and he said the same".
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ الْجَارِيِّ، مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ عَنِ الْحِيتَانِ، يَقْتُلُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا أَوْ تَمُوتُ صَرَدًا فَقَالَ لَيْسَ بِهَا بَأْسٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ سَعْدٌ ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of eating fish that have died from natural causes such as killing each other or severe cold. The hadith states that Sad al-Jari asked two companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - Abdullah Ibn Umar and Abdullah Ibn Amr - about this issue and both gave the same answer; it is permissible to eat them. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible to consume food items which have died due to natural causes as long as they are not harmful for our health. It also teaches us to seek knowledge from reliable sources when we are unsure about something in order to make sure we are following Islamic teachings correctly.
