(Book 24, Hadith 8) #36116
Slaughtering of She-Camels and their Unborn Babies

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that when a she-camel is slaughtered, the unborn baby camel in its womb is also included in the slaughter if it is perfectly formed and has started to grow hair. If it comes out of its mother's womb, it must be slaughtered separately so that blood flows from its heart.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar said, "When a she-camel is slaughtered, what is in its womb is included in the slaughter if it is perfectly formed and its hair has begun to grow. If it comes out of its mother's womb, it is slaughtered so that blood flows from its heart".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for life even at an early stage of development such as an unborn animal which has begun growing hair but not yet been born into this world . Show mercy towards animals . Follow Islamic rulings on slaughtering .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the Islamic ruling on slaughtering she-camels and their unborn babies. According to this hadith, if a she-camel is slaughtered, then whatever was inside her womb will also be included in the slaughter as long as it was perfectly formed and has started to grow hair. However, if the baby camel comes out of its mother's womb before being slaughtered then it must be slaughtered separately so that blood flows from its heart. This ruling applies only for camels; other animals are not subject to this same rule. The main values taught by this hadith are mercy towards animals and respect for life even at an early stage of development such as an unborn baby camel which has begun growing hair but not yet been born into this world.
